Jazz as a development of modern means and an old anarchist attitude. The music of Thomas Steffen does not focus on reach, taste or complacency. Nevertheless, the pieces are catchy, they are based on apparent loops, but which are played acoustically. Micro-themes that are rhythmically and musically considered, changed and recombined. Everything recorded in continuous recordings, without editing, overdubs or other studio tricks. The pieces by Thomas Steffen are layered one after another. Every now and then it is again emptied to leave room for the thoughts. Images that automatically buzz through the listeners during these film-musical pieces.
Although Thomas Steffen is a drummer, the drums are not in the foreground. The pulse, the heartbeat, the underlining of essential features is rather the task. The breathing sound of the drums can be seen as a deliberate departure from the seemingly electronic sound of many modern drum recordings.


Jazz als Weiterentwicklung aus modernen Mitteln und einer alten anarchistischen Haltung. Die Musik von Thomas Steffen schielt nicht auf Reichweiten, Geschmack oder Gefälligkeit. Trotzdem sind die Stücke eingängig, sie basieren auf scheinbaren Loops, die aber akustisch gespielt werden. Mikrothemen, die rhythmisch und musikalisch betrachtet, verändert und neu kombiniert werden. Alles in durchgängigen Aufnahmen eingespielt, ohne Editierung, Overdubs oder anderen Studiotricks. Die Stücke von Thomas Steffen werden nacheinander und übereinander geschichtet. HIn und wieder wird am Ende wieder entmüllt, um Raum zu lassen für die Gedanken. Bilder, die den Hörern automatisch bei diesen filmmusikalischen Stücken durch den Kopf schwirren.
Obwohl Thomas Steffen Schlagzeuger ist, steht das Schlagzeug nicht im Vordergrund. Der Puls, der Herzschlag, die Unterstreichung wesentlicher Merkmale ist vielmehr die Aufgabe. Dabei ist der atmende Klang des Schlagzeugs als bewusste Abkehr vom scheinbar elektronischen Klang vieler moderner Schlagzeugaufnahmen zu sehen.
